• The tenant of WildFell Hall, by Anne Bronte

We’ve decided to write an article in English, as the TPE is supposed to be crossing school subjects. It allows us to deal with English literature, so that we introduce in our project foreign Literature in a foreign language (LEL).

Anne Brontë. Aquarelle de Charlotte Brontë (1834)Anne Bronte(1820-1849) is a writer, as her two sisters Emily(Wuthering Heights, 1847) and Charlotte(Jane Eyre, 1847). Her first novel, Agnes Grey, is about her experience as a governess which last about 4 years. She died when she was 29, because of the tuberculosis, as her brothers and sisters.

The novel we have chosen is The Tenant of WildFell Hall, issued in 1848. This novel has not been well-welcomed but as it had reached nowadays, we can say it’s more that a good one.

The story’s about a girl, Helen Graham, who married a man who appeared to be a debauched. The woman decided to run away with her kid in a small village and she set down in a house dilapidated called WildFell Hall.

The narrator in the first part of the novel is Gilbert Markham, a neighbor of Helen. He gradually got to know Helen, and began to fall in love with her, forgetting about his previous target, Eliza Millward. Of course, the forgotten one wanted to take her revenge, and she peddled the rumor that another man in the village was courting Mrs. Graham, so Gilbert got mad and slapped him. When Gilbert accused Helen to be in love with Gilbert, she just showed her diary.

The second part of the novel is the diary of Helen, and here we learn about the life she used to live. Her marriage with Arthur, the birth of their son, and the decay of her husband’s life, everything is told in her diary. When Helen learnt about the mistress of Arthur, she planned her escape but Arthur found about it and destroyed Helen’s stuff. For Helen, it had been the straw that broke the camel's back so she ran away and hid with her child in WildFell Hall.

In the third part of the story, we learn that Helen came back to her husband to heal him, but unfortunately he died. Gilbert tried to stop Helen from marrying another man but he realized it wasn’t her wedding but a friend’s. He tried to reach Helen but he’s too afraid because of the new social status she had but he finally get to her, by random, and they eventually marry. (Here are some extracts if you want to taste the way the author writes )

The first and the second part of this story deal with thwarted love, because Gilbert can’t have Helen’s love and Helen didn’t succeed to live the beautiful life she wanted with her husband. We can see her that thwarted love isn’t as impossible and it doesn’t have to end on bad or sad thoughts because if you go forward you can fulfill your dreams as Gilbert did.
